Bernard R. “Bernie” Weinert
Age 78 of Somonauk, IL, passed away on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, with his family at his side.
Born March 26, 1945 in Chicago, IL, Bernie was a son of Edward J. and Rose (Née Karpinski) Weinert. He was raised in the south side of Chicago, graduated from Reavis High School Burbank in 1963 and was a proud Army veteran; having served his country from 1965-1966.
Bernie retired from 3M Corporation after 20 years of dedicated service.
He loved to dance; especially the polka and was an avid old western, military, and gladiator movie buff. For many years, Bernie donated to the Boys Town and Military Academies charities which supported young people.
He had a love of Southwest and Indian paraphernalia and artifacts; which drew him to living in Grand Junction, Colorado for a while as he experienced the native culture.
Bernie had a very caring heart and will be truly missed by his family and friends.
Survivors include his siblings, Geraldine (late John) Spellan, William (Virginia) Weinert and Paul (Karen) Weinert; sisters-in-law, Shirley Weinert and Nelda Weinert; over 80 nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and longtime friend, Robert Siefert.
Bernie was preceded in death by his parents, Edward J and Rose Weinert; siblings, Edward, Daniel, Eugene, Dorothy (William Raff), Thomas (Phyllis), Lawrence and Raymond.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 6, 2023 from 3:00 p.m. until the time of a Catholic Wake Service at 6:30 p.m., Rev. Anthony Nyamai officiating, at Blackburn-Giegerich-Sonntag Funeral Home, 1500 Black Road, Joliet, IL 60435.
Relatives and friends are welcome to join the family on Wednesday, June 7, 2023 at 9:50 a.m. at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, 7200 Archer Road, Justice, IL 60458, where Bernie will be laid to rest beside his parents following a 10:00 a.m. committal service. Please meet at the entrance of the cemetery. There will be no formal procession to the cemetery.
